Beyond the recipes, her life story is a pleasure to read. She was raised by her grandmother, who had 14 children of her own. In 1951, she married Jessie Meggett. Her dress cost $19, and they celebrated with poundcake and cherry wine. (Her advice: “Make your wedding small and your marriage big.”) In 1980, they had a proper honeymoon in Europe.
