What is As Dusk Falls about?

The game presents us with the intertwined stories of two extremely different families, found by chance in the middle of a town in Two Rock, Arizona, on historic Route 66, at the end of the 90s. On the one hand, the Holt brothers, who decide to commit a crime in order to help their father and save their family, and on the other, the Walkers, a family in trouble, like any other, with a lack of trust, emotional breakdown and the idea of a new beginning.

Both families collide head-on in an extremely tense hostage situation in which, as we progress, the line between good and bad will become increasingly blurred, and we will have to think with empathy, to understand the different characters and, above all, to think about the rest of the members.

Review: As Dusk Falls

Structured as chapters, the plot of As Dusk Falls presents a series of decisions that have to be made on the spot. Either dialogue choices that will only affect our performance at the end of each episode or branching decisions, which present a consequence to each act, which opens up the decision tree.

Something that adds another level to this gameplay is that As Dusk Falls is also intended as a cooperative game, where up to 8 players will experience the same point of view and vote for which decision they want to make. This lends itself to internal drama within the group of friends itself, which goes along with the gameplay.

As Dusk Falls, your decisions have consequences

As Dusk Falls is designed for replayability. Each of the bifurcation points implies a decision to be made, with two or more possible outcomes; almost always, in the same chapter. During the summary, it is possible to see the decision tree and how the story is threaded with both families. We can know how many paths were opened, how many possible outcomes there were from each decision not made, and it allows us to ask «what if?» for a second game session. Or third or fourth.

Like the best dramatic stories, As Dusk Falls peels away like an onion, layer upon layer of secrets presenting us with new ways to understand the characters’ motivations. The plot is presented under the concept of the mystery box, in which we do not know what the central problem is at the beginning, but we will discover it little by little, with small glimpses and increasingly intricate conflicts, which gives rise to extremely tense situations. As Dusk Falls, in that sense, presents us with a complete drama about the human condition.

How does As Dusk Falls multiplayer work?

One host must start the game and invite the others. Up to 8 players can join. Everyone will see the story from the same perspective, and, at decision-making moments, will vote to see what is chosen. The decision with the most votes will win. Ties, however, will result in a random choice. Finally, there is a system of overriding each other’s vote. Each player has a set number of overrides, which the host sets in advance. When a player decides to override, the decision he deems appropriate will be made.

Does As Dusk Falls have local multiplayer?

Yes, the game allows local multiplayer. Up to 8 players can be on the same screen.

Does As Dusk Falls have online multiplayer?

Yes. In this case, all players must have a copy of the game in order to participate in the session. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no matchmaking, so the game will never put you with strangers to play with.

Does As Dusk Falls have crossplay?

Yes, PC and Xbox players will be able to participate in game sessions with each other.

As Dusk Falls companion app

Something interesting that was implemented in the game is a companion app. This app, available for mobile devices, does not run the game, but allows you to control the actions in it. The app turns the device into a controller with which you can make decisions and perform Quick Time Events. We could think that this was intended for local multiplayer sessions without being required to physically have 8 controllers.

Is As Dusk Falls worth playing?

Initially, the graphic novel style and movement presented through illustrations rather than full animation may not be for everyone, but people who enjoy an interactive audiovisual narrative will find As Dusk Falls a real treasure trove of replayability. If you are someone who cares that the decisions you make in a game have visible and tangible consequences, As Dusk Falls is precisely the game for you. Many times, in a more controlled game, we would like to act one way or another and see what would happen if we were the ones in control of acting. As Dusk Falls allows just that, and lets us feel and live the story from us, through the characters.

As Dusk Falls is a drama, an extremely grounded one. There are no big supervillains, no superhuman heroes, no objectives, no life bars. There is no progress or levels, no bosses or quests. This game puts us in the shoes of the protagonists, gives us control and asks us «What would you do?».
